In 1832, Jonas Chickering founded the first American piano manufacturer in Boston, which became the largest piano maker in America in the mid-19th century. An innovative company unafraid to take risks, Chickering & Sons produced pianos until 1983 and is responsible for introducing the one-piece cast-iron plate and overstrung design found in all grand pianos to this day. Even Henry E. Steinway studied the Chickering piano before founding his own piano company.
